Proper maintenance is essential to the effective functioning of Polaris Sportsman 500 in callous surroundings. As this vehicle is designed to run on all sorts of terrains therefore, maintenance becomes vital. Regular maintenance requires oil change as a lubricant that runs the parts of engine effectively. Oil change is required after 10 hours of its continual functioning but requires maintenance at specified shorter intervals.

Changing oil in Polaris Sportsman 500 is fairly moderate task and requires air compressor, drain plug washers, oil pan, oil filter and its wrench, socket and its wrench and two quarts of 40W40 Polaris Premium synthetic oil. The sequential steps are listed for oil changing with ease:

1. Place the Sportsman 500 on an even work area and fasten its parking brake. Turn on the motor for 2-3 minutes of time as inactive. It will heat the oil, making it rapidly flow and draw off easily.

2. Now place the oil pan under the oil fuel tank to drain it out. Take out the bolt of drain plug with the help of socket wrench to empty the tank fully. While doing this you have to change the old washer of plug bolt with a fresh one. Fix and stiffen the plug bolt in the fuel tank with the help of socket wrench.

3. Take off the oil lube underneath the oil tank. Take off the screws from the mounted frame on the oil tank. Clean the inner oil screen frame with a compressed air. Use thread-locking bonding agent of normal potency on the threads of the frame and tight it up with screws on the oil tank with the rotation of 2 1/2 turns. Keep on screwing till you get the nozzle in line with oil tank’s marking. Now hook up the oil lube back to the frame.

4. Reinstate oil pan underneath the plug bolt that is positioned below the oil sump of the motor. To drain the oil fully from motor you have to take off the plug bolt with the help of socket wrench. On the oil sump of the motor, restore the plug bolt and stiffen it up with the help of socket wrench.

5. Replace oil pan underneath oil filter of Polaris Sportsman 500. Move the oil filter anti-clockwise to release it from motor with the help of a wrench. Remove the oil filter and drain the residual oil if any. Now dispose of oil filter.

6. On a fresh oil filter gasket apply a lean layer of oil. Fix oil filter with screws in its actual place with hands till when it is settled well next to a motor. Stiffen the oil filter with extra 1/4 turn.

7. The fuel tank’s dipstick should be taken off now. Put the funnel in the neck of oil tank to dispense oil up to two quarts. Take off the funnel and reposition its dipstick.

8. Find out the emission line of oil tank placed at the face of oil tank. Now grip the emission line to secure its leakage with fingers. Turn on the motor of ATV up to 30 seconds and then hear its sound when releasing the emission line. The air should be blown out form the line when you release it that shows the readiness of the oil pump. If the sound is not heard then you have to repeat the same step till the pump gets ready.
